I don’t know what to think about the rumor that the fifth-generation iPod will have an all-aluminum case to match the G5 PowerMac and the Powerbook lines. I suppose it’s possible, but the white is so iconic that I’d think they’d be loathe to leave it behind, not to mention the total nightmare it would be trying to keep something like that stratch-free. Either way, I think it’s a given that the next update will include Toshiba’s 80GB hard drive, although I think the 5GB iPod mini rumor is low-balling it a bit—you’d think they’d want to jump ahead of the competition, not just match them. We won’t know the truth for a while, as the iPod mini update isn’t expected until February or March, and the 5G iPod isn’t expected until the middle of the year.
And while we’re on the subject, an article on Electric Design breaks down the technical history of the iPod, from the first model onward. It’s an interesting read if you like to know how your gear all works on the inside.
