Harry Potter is getting a prequel, but it's not a book or movie about the Marauders at Hogwarts or the rise of Voldemort. Instead, it's a stage show about Harry Potter's life before he received that precious acceptance letter.

The stage play is being helmed by producers Colin Callender and Sonia Friedman, and Rowling will be a collaborator and producer on the project. It will tell the tale of the orphaned, outcast Harry Potter and will include "some of our favourite characters from the Harry Potter books." Here's what Rowling had to say:

Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin's vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry's story to the stage. After a year in gestation it is exciting to see this project moving on to the next phase.

The focus here seems to be on Harry's more Dickensian life with the Dursley clan and his interior life—and certainly that life was more closely tied to the Wizarding World than Harry realizes in his first few years at Hogwarts—but I wonder if we'll see any sort of parallel story detailing what is going on with Voldemort and in the Wizarding World at the same time.

I still demand a story in Potter-verse but without Potter and his related friends. Like maybe, about a random life in Hufflepuff or Beaubatons. The universe is so big and it's begging to be explored. That said, this project looks interesting too. It seems to be a less obvious choice and I like it.
