Mitsubishi has shown off their newest addition to LCD technology with an LCD that features a six color backlight. The backlight allows for much higher color accuracy and much better color reproduction, as you would be able to tell from the picture if you weren’t using a lesser LCD yourself. The prototype was a 23-inch monitor with a circuit that converts RGB signals into a signal compliant with the 6 primary colors used. It also features another circuit that will tweak the backlight LEDs as appropriate to keep in check with changes in temperature and the like. While I’d assume this sort of technology will first be used in professional displays, advancements like this tend to trickle down, so expect a 6-color backlight sooner or later if it’s all it’s cracked up to be. After all, LEDs are cheap.
