Like high-school yearbook editors trying to reinvent themselves as college hipsters, South Korean electronics firms are doing their darndest to shed their low-end reps. First it was Samsung at CES, now it’s LG at the forthcoming CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany. The purveyor of cut-rate mobile handsets will be debuting 30 new camera phones, along with the retail coming-out party for its long-anticipated 71-inch plasma display. If Samsung is the Korean Sony, and LG is Hitachi, what’s the Japanese equivalent for Sevitech, which will show off its 40-inch LCD at CeBIT? Not quite sure, but I know this — the Sevitech boys needs a new Web designer, bad. Tried to price out their TVs by clicking “Buy,” but all you end up with is a street map of Gyeongbuk. Y’all ain’t big league quite yet, I’m afraid.
