With all the talk about home networks and digital entertainment hubs lately, suddenly bandwidth within the home has become something of an issue. We’ve all but given up on using 802.11b to transfer files between PCs here at Gizmodo HQ; even at 11Mbps, it just takes too long to move 15 gigabytes of MP3s from one place to another. Turns out what we really need is gigabit Ethernet, which runs as fast as 1000Mbps. It isn’t quite ready for the consumer market yet, but SMC has some new low-cost gigabit Ethernet switches and network cards for the business market, so it’s probably only a matter of time until they (or someone else) brings this stuff out for home networks.
