M. Night Shyamalan's new sci-fi flick After Earth doesn't look immediately terrible in new trailer

Look, if you don't want to give M. Night Shyamalan another chance after The Happening and The Last Airbender, I wouldn't - I couldn't - blame you. But darned if this new trailer for After Earth doesn't make Shyamalan's next movie seem potentially... not totally awful. As we know from SDCC, the movie is set in the future after Earth has been evacuated and quarantined, when Will and Jaden Smith crash on it, and Jaden has to go head out to brave the wild kingdom to find the ship's rescue beacon. The trailer only shows them crashing, Jaden playing Tarzan, and then revealing the Earth-like planet is, indeed, Earth.

There are two reasons why After Earth might end up being okay: 1) Shyamalan didn't write it; he's directing someone else's script for the first time ever, and 2) he seems to be getting the "twist" - that the planet is actually Earth - out of the way quickly so we can all move on.

Unfortunately, there are two reasons why After Earth could suck: 1) it's still directed by M. Night Shyamalan, whose terribleness has far exceeded any good will he engendered with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, and 2) I am 98% certain the movie has another twist in that it's set in our past and Jaden Smith somehow ends up starting the human race. It seems like the kind of thing that only M. Night would still find clever, and moreover, I'm pretty sure I saw a saber-toothed tiger in there.

I would love to be wrong, though. Your thoughts?
