Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hired a new spokesman, Joe Lockhart. The choice has drawn approving murmurs in Washington, DC, and no wonder: This is the guy who handled the Monica Lewinsky scandal for Bill Clinton.
Day after day in 1998, Lockhart got up and defended Bill Clinton against a press relentlessly exposing all the ways the president lied when he said, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.” Such was his job; now his job will involve defending Zuckerberg and the company he built against charges that it broke privacy laws, grossly misled users and routinely covered up its true motivations. Zuckerberg, like Clinton, has an unsettling history practicing the art of deception.

Lockhart “is the type of hire that makes sense for the company,” a former Clinton operative told Politico. That’s true on many levels.
