Microsoft and Samsung’s Hybrid Hard Drive

Electronics Weekly has a few more details about Microsoft and Samsung’s ‘hybrid hard drive’ project. The new hard drives combine flash memory and traditional magnetic hard drive technology, using 1GB of high-speed flash memory as a read/write buffer, much like traditional RAM is now used in hard drives today (in much smaller amounts). The idea is basically to use the flash memory as much as possible, offering faster seek times and a quicker start up. Modern flash memory does have a limit to the number of times to which it can be written, but with my cursed experience with hard drives, my heads would be skipping off my platters long before those limits were reached. Never give the cart-pushing gypsy at Microcenter the finger—you’ll regret it.
