Mitel showed off its new Navigator ‘phone bar’ yesterday at the VoiceCon conference in Orlando (it’s that thing between the monitor and keyboard), and while it’s certainly not going to take the consumer market by storm, it could be an interesting addition to the chair-bound business worker. Essentially a voice-over-IP speakerphone console, the Navigator also works as your standard ‘special function keys’ peripheral, allowing you to launch applications as well as quick-dial other VoIP phones. The Navigator does support the SIP standard as well as Mitel’s proprietary MiNet protocol.
This sort of thing is really hard to judge just from the press releases, since so much of its success depends on its integration with the rest of the user environment. We’ll see what people say when Mitel releases the Navigator in Q3.
