Mystery Wireless Transmitter in Grand Central Station

By

Reader Rob Cherry sent this interesting tidbit:

Just walked through Grand Central station and saw some guys working on a transmitter just above the sign for track (23 I think). The first track you come to passing Olivier’s Italian shop as you come into the main concourse from Lex entrance heading towards Vanderbilt. It looked suspiciously like a microwave repeater like you often see on top of GSM cellphone stores.

Sadly I am cameraphoneless – I suck – but this either means we are about to get kick ass phone reception in GC or they are installing 802.11 (yeah right – dream on).

Anybody seen/heard/confirmed/whatevered this? My guess is that it’s probably just some sort of equipment for the trains, otherwise we’d be hearing a big stink about it from whoever is installing it.

Update: Andy Higham sent this pic from his Treo, and Tim Paul had this to add:

I saw something like that on the south end of the A platform at 34th Street

on Saturday. A few uniformed and un-uniformed cops and other security types

(some with earpieces) were standing around while one guy opened it up and

programming it while we looked on. I’d describe it as a metal box with an

overhead-projector like arm extending vertically. My fianc e said she read

something about how they planned to make the underground areas

signal-friendly during the RNC.
