No doubt disappointing a great many people (myself included), Steve Jobs says Apple isn’t working on a tablet computer or a PDA:
Interviewed on stage at the D:All Things Digital ‘executive conference’, Jobs said that Apple had taken a look at the tablet – a notebook computer into which data can be entered by writing or drawing on the screen – and thinks it is going to fail. Tablets appeal to rich guys with plenty of other devices already, said Jobs, ‘and people accuse us of niche markets!’.
Further down in the article, there is one very interesting tidbit, and that instead of working on a PDA, Apple is going to “focus on the phone as the future of mobile communications.” For the near term this means improving iSync, but could it mean an iPhone is in Apple’s future? Probably not, but it’s always nice to speculate about what how they might revolutionize the cellphone.
