All About Symbian has a nice article with Mark Squires, Nokia’s UK Head of Communications. It’s a bit fawning, but considering the source I think that’s somewhat understandable, and it does go a long way in explaining the mindset behind the 9300’s relative lack of features compared to its big brother, the Nokia 9500. According to Squires, the customer base using the 9500 simply didn’t want Wi-Fi and a camera, so they pulled those features out, scaled the whole thing down, and went for something more svelte and simple.
There’s an implication that Americans want too many features crammed in, while Europeans are satisfied with something straightforward and “smart.” And that’s fine, except the planned price for the 9300 is around $850 – seems like a lot of money for a 150MHz smartphone with no Wi-Fi and limited features, doesn’t it?
