OnStar One-Ups the FBI

Note to criminals on the lam: If you must steal a car, make sure it doesn’t have an OnStar decal on the dashboard. Terrence Kasses Washington (right), one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives, was nabbed yesterday near Cincinnati, 8 months after he escaped from a Louisiana jail. Washington (a.k.a. “Cash”) made the grievous error of stealing an OnStar-equipped Hummer. Police used the system’s GPS information, accurate within 50 meters, to track down the alleged bank robber to a Hampton Inn parking lot. OnStar, of course, only releases such private location data with user consent, or when ordered to do so by a judge. Shouldn’t be long before you hear the Washington tale recounted in an OnStar radio ad — it’s way sexier than that spot with the mom crying about locking her baby in the car.
