Oppo's following up their DV-981HD upscaling DivX-compatible DVD players with the DV-980H, a slightly cheaper model. The 980 doesn't have the Faroudja upscaling technology, but does have 1080p, HDMI 1.2, 7.1 channel audio, and DivX support. Looks like a cheaper alternative at $169 if you're looking to save a few bucks. [Oppo via Technabob]
Eventually, most everyone will upgrade to HD format DVD players, but there isn't enough titles out there and there is no clear indication which HD format (HDDVD or Blueray) people should commit too.
For people with a big library of DVD movies and a widescreen TV, this is an excellent solution. For upscaling from a 480i DVD source, Oppo's video quality is as good much more expensive offering from Denon or Pioneer.
The USB 2.0 also allows you to play DIVX movies off of a hard drive or USB thumb drive. So if you have a lot of movie files on a removable media, it is pretty cool.
Some audiophiles also buy Oppo DVD players (particularly Oppo 970HD) as dedicated SACD audio player. The sound quality is suppose to be amazing for the price.
If you started looking around the web you'll find a lot of Oppo fanboys among video/audiophiles out there.
