Polyphonic MIDI from Old Recordings

By

Reading time 1 minute

Since we’re talking a bit about older things today, here’s an interesting discovery—a few VoIP millionaires have figured out a way to transcribe old piano recordings into MIDI. Transcribing someone playing Mary Had a Little Lamb with one hand is pretty easy. It’s just a series of single notes. But imagine trying transcribe recordings of chords and other harmonies. This software is able to pick out individual keys played as well as pedal positions and, presumably, key strike intensity.

Although it only works with piano right now, Music Thing points out that:

You could analyse a Jimi Hendrix guitar part, edit the notes a little, and replay it with pan-pipe samples over a new track, with the feel & vibe completely intact.
