Possible Playstation Price Drop, Xbox 2 PowerPC or Bust

The falling sales number of the Playstation 2 may signal a price cut ahead as the Xbox takes a units-sold lead for the first time in the console race. The Xbox is currently selling for $149, while the Playstation hovers at $179. It’s not unrealistic to expect a price-drop announcement from Sony at this year’s E3 (although that’s just my speculation).

What isn’t speculation—but just unfounded rumor from an anonymous emailer—is that the current development kits for Xbox 2 are customized Apple G5 PowerMacs with a BIOS change, hopefully dispelling any niggling rumors about an AMD-based Xbox 2 (any Xbox 2 developers are welcome to chime in to confirm or deny that, unless you’re busy designing BallmerDome Arena or something). Not only that, but next-generation dev kits should show up this year with full speed CPUs and video cores (IBM willing), with final dev kits to show up next April, and retail Xbox 2s hitting the stores in Q4 of 2005.
