This looks like it should be airbrushed onto the side of a really tacky t-shirt, but it's actually quite real! An Air Force F-15E near Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, illuminated by apocalyptic lightning.

It must be nerve-fraying enough to drop JDAMs on Taliban without, y'know, hitting the wrong thing. But skies like that? I'd be happy to be the photographer that day.

I was taxiing out to take off in Iraq four years ago when lightning hit the ground directly in front of the flight station...maybe 30 feet away...TWICE. NOT COOL. We still took off, but we were definitely sweating the climb out.
