QuickerTek has released their new 27dB Plug and Play Transceiver to help boost your AirPort Base Station’s reach. Compatible with the complete line of AirPort Base Stations, the device requires no disassembly and “resolves the range problem often experienced when using AirPort Base Stations.” The $180 kit includes mounting brackets, an adapter cable, a wall-mounted power supply and an install CD and is compatible with both OS9 and OSX systems. To give you an idea of the potential performance improvements we re talking about, compare the standard RF output on Apple’s wireless products (around 30mW) to the QuickerTek Transceiver’s cancer-inducing 500mW, or what they refer to as “the maximum power output allowed” by law. (Update— After reader John wrote in to tell us the antennas DO require you to disassemble the AirPort, a quick call to QuickerTek clarified the issue: Graphite, Snow and Extreme Base Stations require you to open them and use the original transceiver, whereas the Express Base Station can use its external antenna port, provided you purchase the $180 plug and play model. QuickerTek also mentioned that they’ll be announcing their G4 and G5 desktop transceivers sometime next week, so look out for that.)
