This latest Amazon deal is a great reminder to not stare a gift horse in the mouth. Amazon’s selling the Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SATA SSD for $495, which is a strong deal considering what the prices of memory and storage have been through lately. Now, is the discount the 52% as shown by Amazon against a list price of $1,040? Or is it a somewhat more modest markdown from the $880 price for the 870 EVO as listed on Samsung’s site? Answer — it doesn’t matter, because $495 for a quick and reliable internal drive is a great price regardless.

The 870 EVO maxes out the SATA III interface at 560 MB/s sequential read and 530 MB/s sequential write. Those numbers represent the ceiling for the SATA protocol, so this isn’t a drive you’d buy for a new build that supports PCIe NVMe — it would bottleneck storage performance significantly. It makes more sense in machines that lack an M.2 slot, NAS arrays that run SATA drives in RAID configurations, or as a secondary storage volume in a desktop that already has an NVMe boot drive. The 2TB capacity holds a full Windows installation, a substantial game library, and years of media without requiring management.

Durable Drive

Endurance is the 870 EVO’s actual selling point, and Samsung is specific about the number: 2,400 TBW (terabytes written) for the 2TB model. That figure means a workload of around 400GB of writes per day would take more than 16 years to exhaust the rated lifespan, which puts it beyond the useful life of virtually any host system you’d install it in. For video production workloads, surveillance systems, or server deployments that write continuously, the endurance is the key.

The 870 EVO uses Samsung’s MLC V-NAND, a three-dimensional NAND architecture that stacks cell layers vertically rather than spreading them across the die. MLC writes two bits per cell, which improves write endurance and data retention compared to the TLC or QLC NAND in most consumer SSDs in this price range. Samsung has also compatibility-tested the 870 EVO against a wide range of host chipsets, NAS enclosures, and video recording hardware, which matters for deployment in professional or semi-professional environments where compatibility failures are disruptive. Security is handled through AES 256-bit hardware encryption with support for TCG/Opal 2.0 and Microsoft eDrive, so the drive meets the requirements for enterprise-style data protection without software overhead.

Steady and Reliable

The 870 EVO is not a speed-focused consumer upgrade for a modern desktop. PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives have made SATA obsolete for any build where the M.2 slot is available, and there are faster, cheaper options in the NVMe category for buyers who have the interface. The 870 EVO survives on the strength of its reliability profile and SATA compatibility, not sequential throughput. Samsung’s reliability track record in the enterprise SSD space backs up the warranty claims in ways that generic alternatives don’t.

With Amazon’s new $495 price tag, the Samsung 870 EVO 2TB is a solid buy for the specific use cases it serves: NAS builds, legacy systems, and secondary storage in workstations where SATA remains the available interface. Ignore the $1,040 list price entirely; the $880 Samsung.com price is the more honest baseline, and against that the Amazon discount is real. The value here is a high-endurance, well-tested SATA drive from a manufacturer with a long record of standing behind its storage products, at a price that reflects its position as a specialty item rather than a mainstream consumer upgrade.
