Laptop Magazine review of Samsung’s new clamshell PDA phone, the SPH-i500. The i500, which still isn’t officially out yet, runs Palm OS 4.1, and has a 66MHz processor, a 65,000 color, 2.5-inch touchscreen display, 16MB of internal RAM, and a Graffiti area just above the dial pad. While it’s impressive that they were able to shrink so much into a 4.7 ounce phone, by the time the i500 comes out it’s already going to seem dated. It lacks a memory card slot and a built-in digital camera (which is becoming de rigeur these days), and Samsung should have tried to get Palm OS 5 on it rather than OS 4.1. We suspect most people wanting a Palm-powered PDA phone would be better off waiting for Handspring’s Treo 600 to come out this Fall. The Treo 600 isn’t as small as the i500, but it’s just so much more powerful that it’s probably worth the wait.
