Schwinn Sting-Ray Redux

JOEL JOHNSON

Reading time 1 minute

The Schwinn Sting-Ray was the epitome of pre-teen lo-ride hi-life: slung-back seats, ape hanger handlebars; when you rode you knew those socks were pulled all the way up. Now Schwinn hopes to rekindle the magic with its updated Sting-Ray bicycle that reflects the continued evolution of its American chopper inspiration, with bigger wheels and a stouter frame. The question is, who will it appeal to? It’s outrageous looks are perhaps too far removed from what today’s kids are willing to ride, yet it doesn’t quite reference the retro-hip style of its namesake enough to pique the hipsters. Time will tell, but I commend Schwinn for bringing back some wicked sickness to bike design.
