The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has put a healthy chunk of change behind some scientists who are working to figure out a way to turn sugar into diesel fuel. Ethanol can already be made by combining yeast and sugar (mmm, ethanol), but they think they can mess with some of those microbes to have them create something closer to traditional gasoline.
Anything that can ease our reliance on foreign oil sounds good to me. Keep it up, science.
