Seagate missed the opportunity to announce this yesterday right when Maxtor did, but they also have a 500GB hard drive on the horizon. But instead of that, we’ll mention the “Momentus FDE,” a 2.5 inch drive from the company that can encrypt data. The encryption is hardware level, and you’ll need some sort of key to unlock the drive (like one of those USB gizmos, or maybe a thumb print). Not the most stunning hard drive advancement we’ve seen in years, but at least companies like Seagate are starting to move towards security; for now, there’s not much preventing thieves from accessing data on the hard drives of stolen PCs. They also have an 8GB MicroDrive, but that doesn’t really matter until it actually finds its way into a product.
