Information about the new Zaurus SL-C3000 units is coming out of Japan and it’s a serious contender. Not only is it in the flip-top clamshell with QWERTY keyboard form-factor that we’re so fond of, it also happens to come with a built-in 4GB microdrive. Now why, you might ask, would I be excited about the new Zaurus, which is sort of like a mini-laptop, but not something like the OQO? Well, considering the fact that all I need in a mobile device is messaging (IM and email) and a way to browse the web, a 416MHz processor on an operating system optimized for mobility is going to do me just as well as a 1GHz processor running a full-blown desktop system—especially when the Zaurus is likely to have twice the battery life and be at least half the price.
Of course, it runs Linux, and historically has a rough-edged user experience (as is typical with many Linux flavors). A perfect machine for those who will take the time to learn how to tweak, though, and it’s always nice to have a few of those around.
