I always appreciate it when an artist is asked about his work and admits that, basically, it’s a total failure. Fortunately, Douglas Irving wasn’t trying to replace traditional clocks when he designed the Sine Clock, a system that pulses three different sine waves to indicate minutes, hours, and a full day, with the shortest-length wave ramping up for 30 seconds, then down again to complete the minute. “After listening,” says Irving, “you get a feeling for the sound at different times of day, but you re never going to really be able to say “It s 3:37pm!”
Although there is supposed to be a software version of the Sine Clock available for download, I couldn’t find it. It could be a plot to sell one of the remaining five hardware sine clocks designed by Irving, which he’ll let go for about $900 apiece.
