UK researchers are developing smart clothing that will react to moisture, opening up porous outer layer to wick away sweat when the wearer is too warm, then closing up again when the person dries out. Then, somehow, they put another layer of non-porous material underneath to prevent rain from coming in (but not moisture from getting out [?]). The best part, really, is the description that the smart clothing opens and closes like pine cones—for whatever reason a coat made of pine cone scales is very appealing. Unfortunately, this research fabric will likely be made of something more mundane, like wool.
