Design
The smoCAN is a modular aluminum cylinder measuring 4.6 × 1.25 inches. The main body has space for a mini-Bic lighter, a 2-inch glass bat, and poker. The body's lower end terminates in the male half of the integrated grinder and screws into the female module below it. Roughly ground material falls through ports in the female module into a .75-inch tall storage section. Keef and other very fine particles then sift through a fine mesh screen at the base of the storage and collect in the bottom end cap. Every module threads into its neighbor and is sealed by a rubber o-ring (keeping water out and incriminating scents in).
Using It
Simple and straightforward—twist left to unscrew a section, twist right to tighten it. The grinder is surprisingly efficient, reducing full nugs to shake in a single pass and the keef catcher is a nice touch as well. Cross-threads and binding were non-issues during the course of testing.
The Best Part
It is silly convenient compared to having a pipe, poker, lighter, stash can, and grinder, wasting pocket space.
Tragic Flaw
It's awkward to carry in a front pants pocket—unless, of course, you enjoy looking like John Holmes with a chubby.
This Is Weird...
People will actually stop you in the street to ask about it—and whether or not it's a pipe bomb.
Test Notes
- The system is modular in that you can either expand the storage capacity with additional sections (sold separately) or reduced to just the main body and grinder
- the mini-Bic and bat are sold separately
- the bat is a tiny one-hitter and having to clear and repack after every hit gets tedious.
- the fine-ground shake is perfect for rolling so why isn't there space for at least a few papers?
- it's dishwasher safe
Should You Buy It?
The $70 price tag might seem excessive at first but the level of convenience and functionality it provides are phenomenal and make it worth every penny. I'm not saying I like it, I'm just not sure how I ever lived without it.
