Rich Brome solves the mystery of the nano-pants, writing in that:
[B]asically, this stuff IS nanotechnology – it’s just really tiny, molecularly perfect particles of certain shapes that have impressive properties. That’s actually where most of the practical applications of nanotechnology are right now – new kinds of materials, not that “micromachines” sci-fi stuff.
But back to pants: Slacks from GAP, Eddie Bauer, Lands End, and others actually do use nanotech to repel stains. The technology is branded as Nano-Care and Nano-Pel, from Nano-tex. But Dockers is using Nano-Tex’s OTHER products – Nano-Dry and Nano-Touch. So in the particular case of Dockers’ Go! Khakis, it seems that it’s plain Teflon that makes it repel stains, and the nanotechnology is actually just used to make the synthetic fabric feel like cotton.
Thanks!
