Finally, the mobile industry is working on the thorniest of mankind s problems: Making sure we don t miss one damn minute of Judge Judy. At the annual Digital Video Broadcasting conference in Dublin, the buzz is all about the DVB-Handheld (DVB-H) standard, approved just last month. The current terrestial standard, DVB-T, is just too much of a battery hog for typical handsets. Nokia and NEC have DVB-H handsets in prototype, and the TechWeb round-up cites a German researcher who waxes poetic on the prospect of televised eBay-type auctions in your pocket. This all follows Nintendo s announcement that its DS gaming system will feature video. Makes me a bit nostalgic for the days of the Sony Watchman, which chewed through 4 double AAs in 90 minutes flat and cost just a bit less than a Yugo. Yeah, I’m getting old.
