The Nara Dreamland amusement park is a real-life Spirited Away

Japan’s Nara Dreamland amusement park, which strongly resembles California’s Disneyland, opened its doors in 1961 and shuttered them in 2006. Since then, this ghostly pastel fairground has grown to resemble the ethereal carnival in Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

Check out all those abandoned buildings with the words “DREAMLAND” emblazoned on them. This park could make a killing renting out its grounds to crews filming scifi or surrealist thrillers (or at least the next live-action Scooby Doo movie). You can also check out photos of the park in 2004 on Theme Park Review (it was still kind of a dump even when open).
