The Phoenix: Why Isn’t There More Hippie-Buddhist-Disco Scifi on TV?

Starring Judson Scott — better known as the dude who stood next to Khan in Star Trek II — this gem from 1982 feels ahead of its time, out of its mind, and disco fabulous.

It’s hard to imagine an opening-credits sequence that makes the hero of the show — an alien who got stuck in some ancient Mayan/Incan ruins a thousand years ago, and gets woken up to fight crime, or something — seem less active than The Phoenix’s: This dude is lying down, basking in the sun, rocking the lotus, and extending his hand at us. Oh, and showing us his awesome pimp medallion.

And it only ran five episodes. Go figure.
