The era of Edward Cullen looks to be coming to a close. The Vampire Diaries, one of the last remnants of the 2000s vampire craze, is ending after season 8.

The show announced the final season during Saturday’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con. “We all have discussed it and we’ve made the decision that this is it,” creator Julie Plec said. “This is going to be the final season of The Vampire Diaries. It’s bittersweet and emotional and we’re all going to be crying in a minute. It’s been a beautiful run.”

The show also released a goodbye promo in recognition of the show’s impending finale.

The shortened 16-episode season will see the return of stars Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham, who had previously hinted that the eighth season could be their last. This comes just two seasons after former star Nina Dobrev made her exit from the show. Luckily, The CW is doing fine with its array of superhero shows like The Flash, which upstaged The Vampire Diaries as the most popular show on the network.
