Our good friend Om Malik tries to get untethered and go for an all-wireless lifestyle, and finds that it’s actually not all that difficult:
I tried a little experiment – how to be wired always, and be not beholden to a Bell pipeline to the Internet. I have to say it proved to be much easier than I really realized – and much has to do with three current trends – the rise of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and of course the unrelenting march of Moore’s Law.
To accomplish this Om sold all his old gear (a Sony Clie NX70 handheld, a Samsung S105 cellphone, and an Apple Titanium PowerBook), traded it in for a 12-inch PowerBook and a Sony Ericsson T610 with a Bluetooth headset, and signed up for T-Mobile’s wireless data and WiFi plans, in the process eliminating 13 pounds from his briefcase.
