Here's further evidence that The Wizard of Oz was nightmare-inducing long before Return to Oz scarred your psyche. Behold this postcard advertising an Oz performance for Jack Singer's Passing Review, a theater company in the early 1900s.
According to this photograph's auction description (from top to bottom) that's the Tin Man, Dorothy, and the Scarecrow. Given the regalia on display here, we can only assume Toto was depicted by a 400-pound syphilitic roustabout named Zebulon who sewed wolfskin to his own flesh.
