This is what it sounds like aboard the International Space Station

You’d think that soaring around Earth on the International Space Station would be pretty quiet, but it turns out life aboard humanity’s orbital outpost is surprisingly noisy — albeit in that comforting, white-noise sort of way. This, straight from commander Chris Hadfield’s twitter, is a recording taken from inside the U.S. lab of the ISS:

Hadfield describes the ambient noise as being “somewhat noisy,” but that “the sounds are of the environment that keeps us alive. Perhaps like in the womb :)”

For peaceful silence, says Hadfield, astronauts need only take themselves outside the ISS:

“Spacewalks are whisper-quiet, just radio comm and your own breath.”
