Prolific comic book illustrator Gene Colan — who was best known for his work on Tomb of Dracula and Howard the Duck and co-creating the vampire hunter Blade — died late Thursday after complications from cancer and liver ailments.

Over the course of a seven-decade career, Colan had worked on tons of titles, including memorable tenures on Daredevil and Detective Comics. With Stan Lee, the artist also co-created Captain America's partner, The Falcon.

You can read a fascinating, in-depth interview from 2001 about the artist and his craft over at The Comics Journal and check out some of his Dracula paintings at Monster Brains. Comic Book Resources also has an excellent retrospective of Colan's career. [AP]
