A six-month-old koala named Phantom was allowed to hold on to his mother while she was being operated on to treat a collapsed lung.

As the Courier Mail reports, the pair managed to survive after being hit by a car on a highway west of Brisbane. No bones were broken, but the mother, named Lizzy, suffered a collapsed lung. Medical veterinarians at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital let Phantom cling to his mother as the lung was being drained.

The joey, named Phantom, climbed on to his mother’s back and cuddled her during the procedure. At one point he even wrapped his little arms around her neck.

According to vet nurse Jamie-Lynn Nevers, Lizzy is recovering and doing well.
