Scientists have created a new chip-sized detector that could be used to create portable detection equipment, not unlike the Star Trek ‘tricorder.’ By taking the technology used in full-sized dye fluorescence systems and consolidating the various parts into a single chip, researchers will be able to develop hand-sized tools to identify materials such as agricultural toxins or DNA (as seen in the famous Original Series episode ‘Paternity Suit, Eternity Suit.’)
