Much like the Yeti, these VMDs will probably be rare seen and found mainly in Asia. They will also leave an intriguing, goat-like spoor. Based on multilayer red laser DVD technology, the disks can hold up to 40 GB on one side and are currently hitting post-planning stages and may be available this year. The drives will be backwards compatible with standard DVDs and will be able to reproduce video in full HD.
Our take? With the blue laser capturing everyone’s attention, this technology will probably become a buffer between current storage systems and future systems. Backwards compatibility is always nice, but having the backing of major industry players is much nicer. Sounds like another LaserDisc—at best.
