Lightsaber mythology is one of the coolest, geekiest, and most interesting niches in all of Star Wars. Each film usually gives us just a tiny bit more, be it with kyber crystals, new colors, or sabers “calling” to characters, like with Rey in The Force Awakens.
Before that moment, though, one of the most significant chapters in lightsaber lore started on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It was the introduction of the Darksaber, a mysterious weapon that had its origins in Jedi and Mandalorian history. The show didn’t dive too deep into it, but as you’ll seen in the exclusive video below, George Lucas was the one who wrote its initial introduction.
From there, the saber made it through a few owners until it appeared on Star Wars Rebels, where executive producer Dave Filoni took Lucas’ blueprint and ran with it, expanding the mythology and building out its history. Check it out.
This clip is from the Star Wars Rebels season three Blu-ray, which comes out August 29. It was a truly great season of Star Wars storytelling, and the Darksaber plays a very significant role, especially for the character of Sabine Wren. Season four starts this fall.
