Watch the Space Battleship Yamato lift off for the first time in a new Yamato 2199 trailer!

Space Battleship Yamato may be the most famous Japanese space opera of all time, and it's going strong in Japan. (In the U.S., where the anime series was renamed Star Blazers, we still haven't gotten the 2010 live-action film.)

Now there's a new anime series coming: Space Battleship Yamato 2199, which will launch with a theatrical release of its opening episodes in April. According to TrekWeb:

The basic story of Yamato 2199 is the same as the first Yamato anime set in 2199, but Yutaka Izubuchi (RahXephon), the 52-year-old animator who worked on mechanical designs and science-fiction concepts on some of the earlier projects in the franchise, is serving as chief director. Yoshinobu Nishizaki, the late producer of the franchise, is credited with the original story. Nobuteru Yuki (Escaflowne, Record of Lodoss War) is designing the characters, and the anime studios XEBEC and AIC are producing the anime. Mechanical designer Makoto Kobayashi (Giant Robo, Last Exile, Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection) revealed at Anime Expo in July that he is working on a Yamato remake for next year.

First, the live-action flick came out in December 2010, not in 2009. (Also, psst - an English fansub is out there on the intarwebs.)

Second - is this just a straight remake? If so, why? Just to stay busy?

Signed, an old-school Yamato fan.
