Believe it or not, this is the Moon. Zoom out for the complete image and the explanation.

Aaron Meyers took NASA’s topographical LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) map of the Moon and, instead of assigning a pixel to each data point, he assigned a bubbly frame from the animated GIF on the left, created by the amazing sprite master Paul Robertson.

The result is this gummy Moon which, unlike some burgers, seems to have some mold. For those of you with huge screens and a desire to explore this image in all its glory, there’s a 7000 x 7000 pixel version too. [Flickr via Today and Tomorrow]
