Looking like something straight out of a sci-fi film, it might shock you to hear that these images aren’t taken from the set of a new Alien film, but are real photographs of scientific experiments.

Captured by Pery Burge, artist-in-residence at Exeter University, UK, she refers to her work as “artistic flow visualization”. In other words, she captures the often chaotic motion of fluids—bubbles, vortices, diffusion, and other fluid instabilities—to create rich, powerful images. The results are equal parts psychedelic, sci-fi and real science. And we love them.

You can ogle more of Burge’s work on her website, Chronoscapes. [Pery Burge via Fuck Yeah Fluid Dynamics]
