Clarinet has figured out a way for PDAs that lack 802.11b and have only InfraRed ports to access WiFi hotspots. Has some serious downsides though, like the range is only about 3 feet, the maximum connection speed is about 4 Mbps, and you have to have a direct line of sight connection with the hotspot for it to work.
