Making the top three is something. Fourth-best has a little less luster to it. It’s still better than dead last, of course—but will notching the fourth-best debut audience for a Peacock scripted original series be enough to get Crystal Lake a second season?
According to Deadline, the Friday the 13th prequel starring Linda Cardellini as Jason Voorhees’ homicidal mother, Pam, scored “1.3 billion minutes watched in its first 11 days, per the latest Nielsen data. NBCUniversal says that makes it the fourth-best scripted original series ever on the streaming platform.”
Additionally, “during the week of October 19, Crystal Lake ranked as the No. 3 streaming original series and first-season series.” It’s doing well online too: “NBCU’s data shows that the series has tallied 1.8 billion earned impressions in the first 24 hours and more than 7.6 million video views in its first 11 days.”
Those are impressive numbers considering that, anecdotally at least, Crystal Lake didn’t seem to have a ton of Peacock support behind it. By comparison, think of how much Prime Video hyped its Carrie horror series, which premiered a week before Crystal Lake did and was similarly a binge release.
(Carrie has already sewed up its season two renewal; according to Nielsen data shared in the Hollywood Reporter, the Stephen King adaptation pulled in 1.26 billion viewing minutes for the week of October 5-11 after debuting on October 7.)
Crystal Lake showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has gone on the record saying he’s got ideas for season two already percolating, maybe involving the Jarvis family we first meet in the fourth Friday the 13th movie, or perhaps doing some further exploration of the town of Crystal Lake’s quirky residents.
Most of the show’s main characters do survive, including Pam and Jason. And there’s still a bit of runway between Crystal Lake‘s finale and the events of the first Friday the 13th movie, which famously ends with the murderous Pam having her head lopped off.
Would you tune in for a second season of Crystal Lake if Peacock decides to renew it? Or do you think the Voorhees family’s backstory got enough creative expansion in the first season?
