Somebody better get Haute and Freddy on the horn: Carrie is coming back for a second season. While this might surprise anyone who’s only read Stephen King’s novel—since the title character famously dies at the end—folks who’ve watched Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode interpretation of the story will know that not only does his Carrie White live, but she leaves an enormous pile of dangling threads in her wake.
It’s enough to make you wonder if Flanagan, who famously laid the foundation for more Midnight Club that never saw the light of day at Netflix, might have known from the get-go that Carrie would be more than just a limited series. He did say even before the show started streaming that he had a three-season arc in mind. So that helps explain, perhaps, why Carrie‘s finale left so many unanswered questions.
At any rate, we won’t have to take to Tumblr to learn what’s next for fugitives Carrie (Summer H. Howell) and Emaline (Thalia Dudek), not to mention the sinister or maybe heroic group of gifted women led by Adelaide (Kate Siegel) and the group of sinister or maybe heroic concerned citizens trying to take them down.
Will season two return to the smoking ruins of Chamberlain to catch up with Sue (Siena Agudong), Tina (Josie Totah), and the other survivors of prom night, whose memories of the disaster have been altered by Adelaide and company? Or will we get a completely separate new story? And if that’s the case, will King, who’s one of Carrie‘s executive producers, take a more hands-on role in helping craft it?
In statements shared by Variety, the author’s enthusiastic involvement is certainly affirmed.
Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, said in part, “We’re excited by where [Flanagan] and Stephen plan to take the story.”
Flanagan added, “From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.”
And from King: “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”
Prime Video’s official announcement leans into Carrie‘s viral success, featuring social media posts demanding a second season.

Ok, but do they want a second season because they loved the first one so much? Or is it because they had to keep rewinding season one to make sure nobody actually said the name “Adelaide” on screen and instead left that detail to be revealed in post-show interviews?
Considering so many reviews (including io9’s) thought Carrie was fantastic until it started shoehorning all those obvious season two teases into the last episodes, letting Flanagan expand his story even more is probably the best possible outcome for everyone… except all those characters who didn’t make it through season one. We’ll miss you most of all, “Chris Hargensen is Carrie Red.”
