Like a moth drawn to a flame, I am a real sucker for a limited-edition Nintendo console. The collector in me takes over, and the next thing you know, my credit card is screaming from euphoria. I felt this high this morning when I finally laid my eyes on the special The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition of the Nintendo Switch 2.
I already own a Switch 2 and don’t need to give the Mario maker more of my money, but goddamn, this Zelda-themed console looks stunning. At a holiday showcase, Nintendo only had the console and matching Joy-Con 2 controllers and dock and the Switch 2 Pro Controller and stand (sold separately or together) behind Plexiglas. Still, it was enough for me to peep all the little touches.
First look at the Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition that comes out on 10/26 for $519.99 and the Zelda-themed Switch 2 Pro Controller ($99.99 or $109.99 with the stand)

On the left Joy-Con 2, which is a darker shade of green than the right one, there’s a pixel-art version of Link holding up the Triforce.

Nintendo really went to town giving this Switch 2 the Zelda treatment. Note how the joysticks are gold instead of the standard blue and orange.

Don’t worry, Zelda is also on here. A pixel version is on the back of the right Joy-Con 2.

The dock has a two-tone colorway with a black top emblazoned with a Triforce pattern and a gold bottom. It’s a sharp-looking dock that you definitely don’t want to hide away in a media cabinet. This game console—all of it—is designed to be proudly displayed out in the open. Otherwise, just buy the boring standard block version.

Here’s one more look at the Zelda-themed Switch 2. It’s a real beaut that’s prettier with more franchise details than the gold Switch Lite: Hyrule Edition that came out in 2024.

The Zelda 40th anniversary Switch 2 Pro Controller is equally as striking in person. Nintendo uses the same colors from the special edition Switch 2 here:

Unfortunately, there aren’t any Easter eggs on this gamepad like there are on the Joy-Con 2s.

The controller’s front is split between black, gold, and green, with the green bleeding over the top to the shoulder buttons and the green wrapping all the way to the backside.

Though both the Zelda Switch 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller don’t come out until later this month on Oct. 29, they immediately sold out when preorders went live in September. Nintendo tells me that they’ll be restocking them at launch, but I expect those to sell out fast, too.
This is just what Nintendo does. Its IP is so strong that it can do these special editions or tie them to a franchise’s anniversary and then charge extra for them. The Zelda 40th anniversary Switch 2 has a $519.99 MSRP, which is $20 more than the standard $499.99 console. Same for the Zelda Switch 2 Pro Controller: it’s $99.99, which is $10 more than the regular version, and is still available for preorder at the time of this writing. Nintendo is also selling the controller bundled with a display stand for $109.99, but it’s sold out like the console.
Sigh.
Maybe it’s for the best that it’s sold out.
