Seagate announced a 15,000 RPM Cheetah 15K.5 that it calls the industry's first 3.5" hard drive based on perpendicular recording technology. Available in 300GB, 147GB and 73GB capacities, the big news is the speedy sustained data transfer rate of this perpendicular recording technology, up to between 73MB and 125MB per second. Whoa. That's 30% faster than its predecessor, the Cheetah 15K.4.
The company hasn't announced pricing yet, but says the 15K.5 is currently shipping to OEMs with 3Gb/s serial attached SCSI (SAS), Ultra320 SCSI, and 4Gb/s fibre channel interfaces, and will be generally available in June. Put that in your array and smoke it.
