Our official Gizmodo Reader of the Year for 2007 is David Bacio, also known as Deputy Sheriff David Bacio. He was one of the runners-up in the Inappropriate Gizmodo Browsing contest, submitting a picture of himself in front of a computer reading Gizmodo while at the station. So why is he the reader of the year? Because some douchebag called up his Sheriff, made a complaint, which ended up in a punishment for him just for being a loyal Giz reader.
In the end, David was determined (by the Sheriff's department) to have violated county internet policy and the code of conduct. He was also removed from his position, docked pay, and has a written reprimand that will stay in his file for three years. And for what? Taking an innocent picture of himself in front of a computer while on the job—an act that takes less time than going to the bathroom or taking a quick coffee break. We salute you, David, for being a loyal Gizmodo reader even despite the crap we got you into with the contest.
And here's to our worst Gizmodo reader of the year, the asshole who called up David's boss to complain. Please escort yourself out. Seriously. We don't want you here.

Comments
interesting...I read iModo when not at school.
Wow, what a bitch move. i hope that that asshole gets hit by a car.
fuck that douchebag. I hope a CRT monitor blows up in his face.
exploding cell phone be wished upon him
If "someone" were to be given his name "they" could
adminiser a black night stick to his skull.
Whats wrong with reading a tech blog at work? If the policy is that strict then why even have computers with internet access...dummies. Was the person who reported it an old office fling?
Whoa - This thread just got real violent, real quick.
And I hope that you didn't just get him into a whole lot more crap. On New Year's Eve. 'Cause that would suck.
You'd think that Darwinism would have removed douchebags from the genepool. Seriously, who's out there mating with douchebags? Please stop....
Anyone else notice that there are way too many stupid rules out there?
Such acts douchebaggery are unacceptable!
Too many beautiful women fall for douchebags because they have low self-esteem. It's the only thing that keeps sororoties going.
I hope someone douches out on them right back.
So this guy entered the contest using his real name and/or other identifying information?
Sure it sucks, but WTF did he think was going to happen?
that is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo unreasonable
maybe that stupid guy is just jealous of david bein here on giz.
SO you had a contest for the "best" wrong place that a person could read Gizmodo and then you're outraged when someone gets into trouble?
riiight....
What would be the point of entering if there was no risk? For that matter how could you win if you don't risk some type of penalty.
I hope ye guys sent him out a nice something for that.
the fallen hero will not be forgotten.
That's the problem with being a cop. People think that since you where a badge you don't eat, crap, sleep, surf, or do anything outside of being an ass. Why do you so many cops are asses, cause stupid complaints like this makes them that way.
David Bacon-bits Bacio!! The other White meat.
Total crap that some dolt cant have a laugh and not be a douch.
....Fuck Tha' Police?
C'mon folks. You really think that David didn't know the department policies regarding internet usage on the job? He had to, and therefore, knew the risks and possible reprimand.
Yet, it's still a lame thing to do to turn the man in.
This sucks on so many levels, I'm on the city-net now at work and could suffer similar assfacedness
REEEAL- AMERICAN- HEEEEEERO!
He's not being real smart with the photo. Which is scary, since he is (was?) in law enforcement. Still, the person who turned him in is a real lowlife.
so if it was a woman that turned him in, would she be a "douchebagette" or is "douchebag" gender nuetral?
may the pox of a 1000 camels be on your soul
Hope that the guy who turned him in gets curbed stomped. What a piece of shit!
I find it interesting that the person who complained isn't standing up for him/herself and telling the world why doing that was so right.
Come on, Sneak, stand up and tell us why.
I will be money that all his superiors break the county internet policy daily, and probably with more questionable sites than giz.
I don't understand, he entered a contest posting a photo of himself doing something he knew to be against department policy (stupid)
he used real information by which he could be identified (more stupid)
Gizmodo gets what kind of readership and he didn't think anyone who knew him or could report him would notice? (even more stupid)
he's a cop, so I'm going to assume he has at least a few enemies, be they deserved or not, making him really susceptible to this kind of thing, he has to know this right? (blindingly stupid)
I'm not saying it was cool to turn him in, but c'mon.
Sounds like someone got there revenge for a traffic ticket or something stupid. But I do think he should have thought it out a bit more, after all it is a small internet! :)
And WTF is up with the sheriff's department firing him? The only thing that's missing from the list of punishments is running over his dog.
Since we can not know who is responsible for the douchebaggery that has happened to David, I say, Giz should lower the ban hammer on Mr. Chen. Why? Because he gets to pants all sorts of gadgets, but then makes others touch them.
douche
While David should have taken more caution is protecting his identity. There are few things worse than a rat, this is douchbaggery at its finest. I say cut him from mouth to ear, then everyone will know what he is.
@corhou99: douchebag is a neuter
He should have just called photoshop, everyone thinks everything is photoshopped. Of course it usually is. It's a small person to cause someone grief like that over something so harmless.
:/ i use to read youporn.com at school.
someone plz call up the local lynch mob. David i hope everything goes well and good luck
douché
haha, this thread is full of win.
I really feel bad for the guy. He took maybe a minute, 3 at the most, to snap a quick pic for a contest. It wasn't like he was doing the things that the other submitters did. I hope they reverse the decision and he gets reinstated.
@nachobel: No, now it is full of loss and fail.
Wow, what an idiot! Both of them!
mr douchebag,
may you have a shotgun shot up yer ass this new year. thank you.
One of the runner-ups? Sounds like this WAS the most inappropriate place to browse Gizmodo.
There must be something in the closets there at Gizmodo Central you can give the guy to sell on eBay to make up for his suspension...
Whoever snitched was a total douchebag.
Marlo Stanfield, Carmelo Anthony, and the cities of b-more and Camden salute you Deputy Sheriff Bacio for also being one of 2007's most ironic beneficiaries of a "Stop Snitching" campaign.
@92BuickLeSabre: That's Balmer, friend, not b-more. Just like the capital of Maryland (which is pronounced "Mare-lin) is Naplis.
A competition involving doing something wrong or potentially risky results in something bad happening. Sure that's never happened before.
Shouldn't be too surprised, I'm a firm believer that douches rule the Earth.
fight on brother. and down with all douchebags!!!!
Snitches get stitches!
Now did he get fired for taking the picture (looking at Giz on the job) or for looking at the picture once posted (which was along with a bunch of NSFW shots)?
I have to admit that it's kind of scumy to turn the guy in. But, a law enforcement officer breaking a rule, publicly posting the evidence, and making himself identifiable ... you really don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to be able to see the consequences of that series of events.
Are any of us really surprised that a Law enforcement officer might have someone looking to cause him problems?
So officers blow through stop lights when there's no emergency, chit chat while parked side by side, park on the sidewalk, act like assholes when they pull you over, tase people who are protesting or in wheelchairs, and their superiors do nothing...
But when one takes a photo of himself browsing the internet, he gets fired, just like that, with no prior record?
Just when I thought the police forces in this country couldn't get any more screwed up!
I find it hard to feel compassion for a cop getting busted for goofing off. Around here they never show up when you want them, but as soon as your car has one thing out of whack legally, they are right there!
oh and everyone stop saying douchebag. Its the "whaazup!" of 2007.
I love a site where you can say asshole. "Fuck newspapers that don't curse" - as they say here.
@Elliuotatar: STOP TAZIN' ME, BRO!
I hope that douchebag falls into a bed of blunt spikes so they can watch their guts fly out as they hit it.
Hey David, you might as well put in your two weeks, and go on the talk show circuit, since the writers will be back by the time you're up for some face time :]
Your 15 minutes could live on if you set up a stage and re-enact your ordeal :] The before and after :]
But getting docked pay, and being removed, that's just screaming lunacy, did they ever tell you at the academy to leave all human behaviour, to be a robocop?
Giz, you should send this guy some stuff that's not wanted back by it's mfg's, so he can auction it or at least ignore the sting for a while.
i don't know maybe the guy was piss, because he got a ticket or was arrested by that officer. it could happen...
If I were in his position, when getting docked pay... etc. I'd just be like "You best be joking...: ahaha.
What a douche move on who ever called... and why would you call?
Suggesting violence toward the loser who reported him is pointless. Karma is a bitch. He/she will pay.
David, sorry about your job. I hope you find something better and soon.
I work for a county agency and surf Giz at work. It may be a "violation" of internet usage policy*, but why are they being so uptight about it? We have a similar internet use policy to make sure people actually do some work...if he was surfing Giz and etc all day that would be one thing, but sheriff's deputies are usually out on the beat or doing paperwork.
The person that reported it is a fuck, and so is the douche that enforced the policy all hard-assed! And the punishment is totally whack, too.
*And, no, just because I wrote the policy at work doesn't mean that I'm exempt...everyone can surf, we just make sure that they don't do it all day long. Employees are not slaves! We have very rarely had issues with people not doing their jobs or doing them properly because of internet usage.
I didn't read all the rants, but the story does not say David actually lost his job.
"He was also removed from his position, docked pay, and has a written reprimand that will stay in his file for three years."
Docked pay, and reprimand don't go with getting fired. He's probably back out in a squad car. Most cops I know would prefer that duty over county jail duty anyway.
I think David made up this story to get another 15 minutes. ooorrrr an inmate is a Giz reader and ratted him out. Not THAT would be a story!
