After a mammoth building session, Lego master Mark Kelso has just recently put the last brick on his model of the Invisible Hand, General Grevious' ship from Star Wars Episode III. Yes, that photo of him and his model is to scale—it's frickin' massive. It took an equally massive 9 months to build too:
The completed ship is 231 studs long (that's almost 73 inches, for us non-Lego-geeks), 41 studs wide and weighs about 30 pounds. It's packed with attention to detail that has to be seen to be believed, down to different antenna sizes dotted around the tower and complex engine-plumbing. Mark's decision to avoid too many exposed studs must have added considerably to both the expense and building time, but has resulted in something that looks almost like a prop from a Lucas' set.
Whether you think "dedication to hobby" or "Lego nutcase in action," you've got to admit its pretty awesome. Now, who on Earth would think of taking on a project like that? [Lego Invisible Hand via Brothers Brick]

Give me some room boys, I think I just came.
That guy is getting some tail.
Star destroyers are much cooler looking than that thing, but still, that's quite the engineering and design effort, so wow and congratulations!
I wonder what his wife has to say about this project...
What, no wife?
Girlfriend?
Friend?
Dog?
nevermind.
geekasm!
Sidenote: When is LEGO going to make aluminum bricks? That way, this guy could build me a car, or a small house or something.
@iamcrazyed: Dear Diary, Just spent 9 months guaranteeing I will remain a virgin for life. Love, Mark
Lambaste him if you will, but without the crazy bastards with lots of time and lots of legos, we wouldn't have these awesome models to gawk at. Good show.
@SchruteBuck:P.S. Next project: LEGO model of Tatooine Princess Leia.
(shudder...)
Don't hate. You can volley back and forth about whether or not this guy has a life or friends or a significant other all you want. Basically it comes down to this: he set a goal, put forth a LOT of impressive effort, and accomplished something pretty profound, whether you like LEGOs or not. He made a commitment to something and followed it through. While condescending jackholes like yourselves pass judgment when the greatest thing you've accomplished today is peel your phat a§§e§ off the couch and from in front of Family Guy long enough to make it to the fridge for another bowl of ice cream, and to the computer to put down someone else that's done more in 9 months than you've done in your lives. Give the guy credit for being ambitious, regardless of whether or not you feel it was worth it.
@iamcrazyed: That's how he keeps the title of "LEGO Master"!
This dude needs a nap. Look at those eyes. Yikes!
Cleanup in Aisle 5!
Someone needs to make a Lego Star Wars movie with all these models.
And the award for 'Best Use of a Lego Wagon Wheel Ever' goes to...
Amazing, can't imagine not a single drop of glue was used!
I can't wait for the Star Wars uber-fanboys to hit up the Wookiepedia and point out all the minute discrepancies between this and the real thing*. Mr. Kelso, prepare to get served!
* - And by 'real thing' I mean ILM's CGI model.
i wanna see the instruction manual for something like that.
That is totally sick... makes me want to go blow a grand on Legos and try my hand at it.@
href="#c3778255">Kaiser-Machead: I agree, this guy is amazing. I wonder what he'll build next..?
Perhaps he should be working for ILM... he's got the creative spark.
I don't remember this ship... but for his next lego model he can build Red Dwarf (after the nanobots rebuilt it) - all he has to do is knock off the tail fins and sprey paint it red.
I'd love to see someone take a wack at some translucent lego pieces, and build Sonny from i-Robot. Star Wars is fine and dandy, but I'd be all over an NS-5.
i'll bet his mom is so proud.
I appreciate anyone who can stay on one project for 9 months and not give up. Especially a hobby, which if you were to quit, no one would notice. It really looks stellar. Let's hope he doesn't get the urge to re-enact its final battle and rip the front part off yelling "RRREEEERRREGWWWOOOOROOSHHHHH GAAAADOOOOOOSHHH BBBBOOOOMMSCREEEEEEeeeee.....::sob::"
@Fierock:
This was the one Ben and Anakin landed after General Grevious ejected and the the ship broke in half.
@JESUS:
I (respectfully) DEMAND AN UPDATE ON TEH LEGO FALCON!!!
He reminds me a bit of General Grievous himself.
"30 pounds?" It would have to be hollow. Are all of those shapes standard Lego?
@coach: I pegged him for more of a Count Dooku myself.
Sweeeeetttt!!!
Damn. The official Millennium Falcon set's got nothin' on this.
Hmm virgin for life has a 9 month build-out and has a 30 pound baby Star Wars toy.
Am I the only one not impressed by lego models? I mean they are legos. There is not much skills to making anythying with them. You click them together. So what. The guy has too much time on his hands is all and either a free supply of legos or enough money to blow on them to make the model. Now carve it out of a big tree or make custom parts from custom molds. Then I will be impressed. But legos? Come on.
@Husar: I suppose there is not much skill involved making a mark with a pencil or paintbrush or even making sound from a musical instrument.
Great job. I wish I had not only the skill, but patience to complete such a job.
if he calls himself an 'artist', that's guaranteed to get him tail, as long as he's somewhat known.
I'm patiently waiting for Jesus to finish his Lego Millennium Falcon model.
He's going on a month having it, but I will lose faith in him. I want to get to heaven some day...
@Kaiser-Machead:
LOL
"Sometimes a 30-pound lego starship is just a 30-pound lego starship." -- Sigmund Freud
my question is? does lego make all the designing just for 1 ship... now a days technology maybe they just feed a spaceship picture into a scanner and then the pc starts making the cubes layout.,.
I would have guessed way heavier than 30 pounds.
Also, the tail-getting powers of the "artist" moniker are diminished by the fact that it causes girls to suspect you might be gay. Unless you are after dudes. In which case it is gold.
@theespacepope:
That's the funniest thing I've read in over a week. And now my co-workers know what I'm doing with my afternoon. Thanks. No really, thanks.
@DISCOFUNK Building lego models is art. Yes. But it is as much art a NASCAR driver is an athlete and NASCAR is a sport.
Just my two cents of course. NASCAR and Lego model builders don't impress me like they should I guess.
I just Gizzed a little in my shorts ;^)
On the next episode of LegoStar Galactica...
@Husar: carve out a tree?..have you no enviromental values?
Oh your Gawd!!! That is amazing, if only I had the time, patience, money and space for such an undertaking. Great job.
so how dorky am I if I saw this photo, then immediately needed to change my pants?
@AKMARKSMAN You know that Legos would last 1000 years in a land fill, right?
I totally made that up.
There are pleny to trees that fall on their own so don't go out and cut one down just to show me your wood working skills. :)
I guess Zod gave up on killing superman and took up legos.
Vavilos!
His serious look on his face is PRICELESS. Like "Yah, I know I don't get laid, but this thing is FRICKEN SWEET, I AM THE KING GEEK".
But it's still really cool.
Geez People!! Don't you ever get bored bagging on someone for doing something amazing and cool be saying they'll never get a girlfriend, sex, wife, boyfriend... etc.?
I've worked in Special Effects for almost 20 years as
